Full Description

Former military barracks, built in 1938, which occupied an area of circa 14.1 hectares, which are visible on RAF World War II photographs as a group of huts, buildings and H-blocks surrounding a large parade ground. The camp hosted British troops, allies and prisoners of war and was used for training new intakes of volunteers and conscripts. Various buildings have been incorporated into the Pinefields Industrial Estate which now occupies the site. Lengths of perimeter track area also extant, in particularly along the southern sector adjoining the railway. Some of the metal gate posts also remain in situ. RCAHMS site visit 2007 recorded that most of the surviving buildings are of brick with concrete lintels, but at least two wooden huts survive, and two brick and concrete buildings still stand at NJ 23061 62522 and NJ 23028 62532. At the western corner of the barracks was a pillbox at NJ2301162172 (NJ26SW0126) with another at NJ 2318 6261. Also within the area of the camp is the former Pinefields Area Control (NJ26SW0496) last used for Civil Defence purposes in 1968.
