Full Description

Cemetery, still in use. The earliest section, in the southwest and first used in 1858, is depicted on the OS 1st edition map as 'New Cemetery'. At the southwest corner is a lodge. By the time of the 2nd edition it had been doubled in size with an extension the northeast opened in 1878. It since been further enlarged to the southeast and across the road to the northeast. At the boundary between the two older sections, in the southwest and southeast, is a small open sided pavilion, constructed of sandstone with timber boardings on the inside, decorative cast iron work to the sides and roof, and hipped slate roof. Graves include that of Admiral Sir Martin Dunbar-Nasmith, awarded a Victoria Cross during the First World War, for action in the Sea of Marmara, in the Dardanelles in May-June 1915. Also Lt Colonel William Rennie VC, awarded a Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry in September 1857 at Lucknow. Within the cemetery there are 57 Commonwealth war graves, 28 of the First World War and 29 of the Second World War. Monumental inscriptions within the churchyard have been recorded by the Moray Burial Ground Research Group.
