Full Description
Bridge, built on the site of a former road bridge across the River Lossie. The original bridge was designed by John Willet in 1873. It replaced a bridge from 1830 by William Robertson, Elgin, which in turn replaced a bridge from 1814, which was destroyed during the Great Spate of 1829. It was an iron girder bridge, supported by a central pair of round cast iron pillars and rusticated ashlar terminal piers, and with a cast iron parapet. The approach ramps had a low coped wall and pyramidal coped end buttresses. The bridge was by-passed in 1988, becoming a pedestrian bridge. A field survey of the bridge was carried out by SIAS in 1981, and further recording was carried out by AOC in 2011 as part of the Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme. The 19th century bridge was replaced in 2014 as part of the Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme, and the parapets from this one placed on a new cycle path.
