Full Description

Townhouse, at 9 High Street, also named as Auchry's House. It was built in 1893 by Andrew Heiton of Perth in a Scots Baronial style, and rebuilt after fire damage in circa 1974. It is an asymmetrical, two-storey and attic house, constructed from bull-faced rubble with ashlar dressings. The entrance is in the drum tower on the West gable, with a reused panel above that is dated 1576 and initialled 'I C' for Cumming of Lochtervandich, whose house stood on this site. Above the doorway there is also inscribed 'DO VEILL AND SET NOCHT BY DEMYINING FOR NO MAN SHALL UNDEMIT BE.' There is an advanced South-facing crowstepped bay to the West, with a tripartite at the ground floor, two windows at the first floor and a bowed oriel at the attic level. There are chamfered corners to the ground floor, corbelled to square at the first floor. The recessed South-facing bay to the East has ground floor windows laid out 1-2-1, with a single bipartite in the first floor. There are vents to the basement in the form of gun loops. The gables are crowstepped, and there is a slate roof. There are decorative cast-iron railings to the front of the house, and a modern wing to the rear.

Period Notes
