Full Description
Large Scots Baronial Mansion with American influence, now known as the Mansion House Hotel. It was first built for William Grigor by A and W Reid in the mid-19th century, but remodelled and enlarged in 1882-3 by architect William Kidner, who dressed it in its current Baronial style. It is an asymmetrical, two-storey mansion, with a castellated tower and stair turret rising a further stage. It is constructed from bull-faced rubble, with tooled ashlar dressings and a battered base course, and there is a terrace with a stone balustrade overlooking the River Lossie. There is a large square porch with flanking pillars and pinnacles, and a round-arched entrance decorated with heavy cable moulding. There are mullion and transom sash windows of two, three and four lights, with plate glass glazing. The first floor windows have finialled gables above, either straight, decorated, crowstepped or piended, and there is a two-storey semi-circular, castellated bay on the river front. There are tall coped stacks and slate roofs. A rubble wall surrounds the garden area. Inside, there is a half panelled hall, a staircase with wooden turned balusters, panelled and balustered radiator cases. Also known as Blackfriarshaugh.
