Full Description

Mercat cross of Elgin, commonly known as the Muckle Cross. It was first erected in circa 1635, but destroyed in 1792. The present cross was built by Sydney Mitchell in 1888, and is to the East of St Giles' Church (NJ26SW0015). The original cross consisted of a hexagonal platform or raised balcony, 12 feet high, from the centre of which rose a tall shaft surmounted by a Scottish Lion. Only the lion survives, and the rest of the present cross is a restoration. There is a hexagonal platform, which is itself mounted on four steps, following the hexagonal plan. It is constructed from ashlar, with fluted pilasters at each angle with Ionic capitals and gargoyles. There are shell-headed niches with seats on five of the faces, and an entrance platform to the sixth. Above this there is a tall parapet, with panelled pilasters and a St Giles emblem on the East face. On the base is a 12 feet (3.7 metres) high shaft, supporting the original rampant lion with shield.
