Full Description
Remains of three buildings which are depicted at this location on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. A well lies to the south. Only one building is depicted, in ruins, on present maps. An archaeological survey by Murray Archaeological Surveys Ltd in 2007 recorded one of the buildings very heavily overgrown with rubble in the interior, orientated east - west and 9.4 m x 5.3 m with the remains of the other building circa 36 m to the east. They were constructed of rounded pebbles and angular field stones bonded with yellow clay and tempered with straw. A cluster of buildings called 'Kemps' is shown on Roy's military map of 1747-5 so it is possible that the recorded 19th century buildings may be a replacement for the 18th century settlement.
