Full Description

Former parish church and church hall, later a United Free church. It is depicted on the 1st edition OS map which shows the church with two rectangular buildings immediately to the south that formed a Free Church School, later used as a church hall. The school is not annotated as such on the 2nd edition map. The church was originally the parish church, replacing the medieval church (NJ26SE0046). It was in turn replaced by a new parish church (NJ26SE0039) built outwith the village in the mid-19th century (1843-4), at which time it was repaired and became a Free Church. The church is now a private house. It is a small, plain, rectangular building of coursed, roughly shaped sandstone blocks with ashlar surrounds and quoins, and a slate roof. The principal, west, gable has a modern doorway, either side of which are tall round-arched windows, and the gable is surmounted by a gabled bellcote. The side elevations of the church each have four tall, narrow round-arched windows. A flat stone bearing a calvary cross (cross on a stepped base) with simplistic tree of life motif flanking the cross shaft, said to have come from Urquhart Priory (NJ26SE0005) was formerly mounted inside the former church hall, but was removed in 2024 to Pluscarden Abbey (NJ15NW0006). Photographic recording of the St Margare's Hall was carried out in April 2025 ahead of proposed conversion to residential use. In connection with this some fixtures have been removed. These include a memorial plaque to the Reverend Gordon Ingram formerly in the entrance hall and stained glass picture. A brass war memorial and brass plaque to a former minister are now in Urquhart Village Hall (NJ26SE0251). A circular stained glass window is now in the former Free Church (now named The Grain Dryer) from which it had come.
