Full Description
Mound originally interpreted as a round barrow. An undisturbed, grass-covered barrow, 28 m x 25 m and 2 m high lies immediately south of the B9113 Forfar to Montrose road was recorded by J. Sherriff during field survey in 1980. It is sub-circular measuring circa 28 m by 25 m and standing to a height of circa 2 m. Modern plough damage was identified to the monument from aerial photographs taken by HES in July 2021. A programme of archaeological works was undertaken by AOC Archaeology to assess the damage to the monument, comprising topographic study, geophysical survey, a walkover survey, and test trenching. Findings from these works recorded the extent of the plough damage and the re-distribution of material from the top of the mound to its base. Below this a natural glacial till deposit was encountered. No finds of in-situ or disturbed archaeological remains were encountered. The mound was deemed to be of natural formation and not of an archaeological nature.
