Full Description

Site of mound or motte. The OS Name Book (1866) recorded it as a small artificial mound supposed to be the place of execution of the Thane of Lightnot. In 1869 the farmer turned up human bones when ploughing. In 1965, at which time it was being ploughed, it was identified as a probable cairn, and measured 32m in diameter and 2.5m high. OS (1968) suggested it to be natural, then a prominent mound, except in the northwest where it merged with the surrounding ground. The farmer at Crovie Farm built a water cistern into its centre in 1967 and reported that the mound is composed of earth and gravel to a depth of 1.82m where it is sand. It has now been identified as a possible motte by Peter Yeoman (1988).
