Full Description

Cropmarks of a ring-ditch and souterrains, recorded by the RCAHMS during aerial reconnaissance in 1978 and by them and AAS in subsequent years. A trial trenching evaluation carried out by CFA Archaeology in September 2014 recorded a number of archaeological features. Trench 1 revealed an arc of pits, a cluster of pits, and a penanular ring dutch structure open to the SW, likely of the later prehistoric period, although it is not clear whether these are all from a single phase of occupation. Two features equating to possible souterrains visible on aerial photographs were recorded in trenches 8 and 13/18. These were found to be curved shallow ditches, the profile of the ditch and shallow depth suggesting that they may be the truncated remains of ring-ditch houses. An arrangement of four pits in Trench 8 is likely to be the remains of a later prehistoric four-poster structure. An arc of pits in Trench 8 produced no dating evidence. Two elongated pits in Trench 10 are reminiscent of a pit alignment although they did not continue into adjacent trenches. Two linear grooves and a pit in Trench 12 may be the remains of a structure. Further pits and clusters of pits indicate further probable prehistoric activity, although its nature is unclear from the evaluation. Cultivation furrows, of probable medieval date, were identified within many of the trenches. Further archaeological investigation was carried out by CFA in 2015, comprising a first phase of topsoil stripping, mapping recording and excavation of features ahead of sand and gravel extraction. The area excavated was a strip along the southern extent of the site from circa NO 6158 5015 to NO 6181 5008. This identified a number of features, including pits and ditches, some of these in clusters, and some of the pits containing Neolithic pottery. Cultivation furrows, of probable medieval date, were identified throughout the stripped area. A second phase of evaluation was carried out by CFA in 2016 in the north-eastern area of the site, from circa NO 6171 5018 to NO 6184 5013. Seven concentrations of prehistoric features were recorded, along with numerous isolated pits, pit clusters and rough pit alignments. The seven concentrations are two curvilinear features with associated pits, a cluster of large pits, a curvilinear feature made up of three conjoined pits (which were visible on the aerial photographs), and a roundhouse. Pottery recovered from various features range from Early Neolithic through to Late Bronze Age/Iron Age. The evidence from this and the first phase of work suggests the area was occupied throughout much of the prehistoric period from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. A third phase of investigation was carried out by CFA in September 2018 in the western part of the site. The spread of features was less dense than elsewhere but included a ring-groove house and a number of other pit type features.
