Full Description
Cropmarks of ring-ditches, circular enclosures, and souterrains are visible in a field to the south side of the track to Dunnottar Castle. The car park overlies what looks like part of wide trace of an oval enclosure. There are a number of pits and a few dark 'blobs' which might indicate hut stances. Part of a curvilinear mark appears to curve round a souterrain and dark solid sub-square mark. This may represent part of an enclosure, or may be a trackway. These marks are partially overlain by later linear features, some of which are rig and furrow and others probably represent field boundaries. Evaluation on the site of a proposed car park extension in the northwest corner of the field showed that the wide curving cropmark south of the existing car park was the remains of a mill lade from Mains of Dunnottar Farm. The only other features observed in the trial trenches were agricultural drains.
