Full Description
Cropmarks of an enclosure, recorded by CUCAP in 1951. It measures about 30m square, and lies in a field north of Newbarns. The northeast corner of this feature was excavated by CFA in September 1998. The enclosure was found to be defined by a U-shaped ditch 1.35m wide by 0.50m deep. A line of small post-holes were visible inside the enclosure circa 1.2m from the inner ditch edge. A break at the corner, circa 3m wide, may represent an entrance, which is visible on the APs. The ditch narrowed at each terminus and turned inwards slightly. Several small pits or post-holes were identified, circa 0.25m in diameter and depth. One lay in the centre of the entrance and two immediately outside by the southern terminus. No artefacts were found. Inside the enclosure were three pits, circa 1.5m by 1m by circa 0.6m deep, arranged in a semi-circle. Outside the enclosure were eleven other small pits or post-holes varying in diameter from 0.3-0.7m and only 0.3m deep. Two other pit-like features were cut by the ditch. No conclusions were made but it was suggested that this might be a square barrow due to the similarities of one excavated nearby at Redcastle (NO65SE0018).
