Full Description
Cropmark of a square enclosure plus possible arc of a ditch. Possible homestead moat. A transcription of aerial photographs by RCAHMS in 2000 revealed a number of linear features along with a series of pits in addition to the races of enclosures described. The pits are thought to be prehistoric in date, while linear features to the South are thought to be the remains of rig and furrow. A trial trenching evaluation was carried out over the south-east area of this cropmark site, centred at circa NO 7144 7207, in May 2000 by SUAT in advance of a proposed housing development. The evaluation revealed the remains of rig and furrow cultivation in the form of furrows cut into the natural till which were recorded and sampled. A small group of artefacts was recovered from the rig and furrow, but no material of medieval date was present with none of the finds pre-dating the 17th century. In 2005 a watching brief was carried out during straightening of electricity poles, but no archaeological features or finds were evident during the course of the work. A watching brief was carried out in May 2018 by Cameron Archaeology ahead of a proposed new road. The watching brief area covered a strip from circa NO 7144 7215 to NO 7127 7206, and recorded rig and furrow ridges as had been previously recorded in the aerial photographs. No other features were identified but three quartzite objects were found in the topsoil, a core with two platforms, a core or short end-scraper and a short end-scraper probably dating to the Middle or Late Bronze Age. A watching brief was carried out in June 2018 by Cameron Archaeology during the soil strip for a house plot centred at NO 7134 7208 (NO77SW0118). No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were recorded, however raw quartzite was identified which complements the finds recovered during the May 2018 watching brief. See also NO77SW0117 and NO77SW0173 for watching briefs over further house plots.
Period Notes
Three quartzite objects were found in the topsoil, a core with two platforms, core or short end-scraper and a short end-scraper probably dating to the Middle or Late Bronze Age.
