Full Description
Grouse-butts, not shown on the OS historical maps, but shown on the current edition OS map. A walkover survey carried out by West Coast Archaeological Services in October 2020, covering an area of a proposed woodland planting and regeneration scheme (NJ25SW0049), recorded an alignment of nine very degraded turf and stone built shooting butts centred at NJ 24168 50840 (Site 14). They were located outside the proposed tree planting areas, but a proposed access track route cuts through the alignment, so they were included in the walkover survey. The butts were hidden under deep heather, deer grass and moss, and were not recorded in detail. Another alignment of grouse-butts was recorded to the north (NJ25SW0051).
