Full Description

Remains of a farmstead, long house, possible shieling hut, enclosure and a stone-lined well, depicted on the historic OS maps. The 1st edition map depicts a long, unroofed, building of four compartments, with a large rectilinear enclosure to the northeast. By the time of the 2nd edition map a larger rectangular enclosure is shown, its northern portion overlapping the earlier smaller enclosure. The remains of the farmstead were recorded during a walkover survey by Highland Archaeology Services in November 2021 (NJ25SE0065). The long building had been constructed with five bay or compartments, measuring an overall 29 m in length and 5 m in width, covered in moss and thick bracken making it hard to gauge the full extent of the structure. Due to overgrown vegetation the stone-lined well, shieling hut and enclosure walls were not visible from the ground.
