Full Description

A line of possible pits visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Fieldwalking in May and June 2017 as part of the Mesolithic Deeside Project recovered a total of 88 lithics, mainly of Mesolithic date. They include seven cores, 11 retouched tools, 38 flakes and 13 blades. A number of burnt flints were also found. They showed a linear distribution within the field, bordering a palaeochannel which runs parallel to the present Dee. Test pitting was undertaken in February 2022, comprising 46 test pits of which almost half were targeted on the cropmark features. A total of 150 worked flints were recovered, the assemblage differing slightly in composition to that from the fieldwalking in part reflecting the difference in collection methods, with larger numbers of smaller flints more readily identified in the test pitting. Analysis of the assemblages by A Clark concluded that the lithics represent activities involving making and use of flint tools from the Late Mesolithic into the Neolithic. Though flakes dominate the assemblage more blades were found in the excavations, possibly suggesting area of blade production and/.or use that has not been too disturbed by ploughing. The relative large number of scrapers (eight) compared to other areas field-walked by the project suggests some form of processing activity located on the edge of the paleochannel. Several periods of activity are represented: two blades date to the Mesolithic whilst the notched blades could be Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic. Most of the scrapers are end scrapers which most likely dates them to the Neolithic or Bronze Age.
