Full Description

Remains of souterrains. Two lie in arable farmland at around 40 m OD. The eastern souterrain measures some 10 m in length by about 2 m wide and is aligned approximately northeast to southwest. Some 40 m to the west is a second souterrain, approximately 20 m long by about 2 m wide, running north northwest to south southeast. A length of ditch some 2 m wide runs northeast for about 7 m and apparently represents an entrance or side chamber. These souterrains were discovered during aerial reconnaissance by the RCAHMS in 1988 and subsequently photographed in 1994. Immediately to the north between the dyke and just outwith the scheduled area two adjoining souterrains were found during an evaluation for road widening. The excavation of this feature in Oct-Dec 2001 by CFA identified a large stone lined and corbelled souterrain with a double passage connected by a narrow passage. The main eastern passage of the souterrain was circa 18.90 m long, 2.20 m wide and 2 m deep. The smaller western passage was 10.2 m long, 2 m wide and 1.60 m deep. Paved areas were uncovered either side of the narrow, sloping entrance to the eastern passage. To the west of the souterrain a possible cooking pit was located. A rare Roman patera handle was recovered from the backfill of the souterrain, and the upper half of a large rotary quern was recovered from the blocking of the entrance of the eastern passage.
