Full Description

Site of a castle. The site of the Castle of the Durwards was said to have stood where the Easter Peel farmhouse now stands. A slight hollow immediately west of farmhouse was locally believed to be a remnant of the moat that surrounded the castle, which belonged to Sir Alan Durward, who was active during the reign of Alexander III (1249-86). The ruins were said to be still visible in 1794. This was presumably the Peel of Lintrathen where the Durwards kept the Bell of St Madden until their male line died out circa 1400. There is now no trace of a moat round Easter Peel farm-house which occupies what would be a poor site for a castle. However to the south of the farm, at NO 2634 5392, is a low disturbed knoll within a sub-rectangular enclosure which would make a more suitable site. This enclosure is apparent as a cropmark on an aerial photograph, but is visible on the ground only as a spread.
