Full Description

The cropmarks of two rectangular enclosures with possible internal features were recorded in a field of cereal crop. There is also a faint trace of a possible circular enclosure immediately to the south. Excavation in June-July 2013 revealed the larger square enclosure to measure circa 20 across with a single entrance on the north side. The smaller enclosure measured circa 16m across also with a single entrance on the north. The enclosures each enclosed a very truncated ring ditch, postholes and pits. Just to the north of the smaller enclosure two square barrows were identified, one surrounding a well constructed long cist. The collapsed capstones covered a partially preserved human burial. The other barrow enclosed a grave that showed traces of a wooden coffin but no preserved human remains. These barrow remains relate to a Pictish barrow cemetery site.
