Full Description

Cropmark of a mound depicted on the OS 1st edition maps, and annotated on the 2nd edition map as 'site of'. It was excavated in 1906 when it was described as a barely perceptible mound with encircling ditch, the ditch 4.26 m wide at the top. The excavation of the ditch revealed a row of stones in ditch circa 0.91 m down, which appeared to encircle the mound. Spaces between the stones were filled with a mixture of black earth and what appeared to be 'trodden' charcoal. The width of stone 'wall' appear to vary from 0.31 m to 0.63 m. When stones were removed 'a filling of thin slabs of shaley stone, some 1ft long, loosely arranged horizontally with sand between' were found. A few glazed pottery sherds of 18th - 19th century date were found near the surface, and also a few flints (described as 'natural', or unworked) but no specific artefacts. Little depth remained of surface of mound above the natural. It is visible as a circular crop mark, with a wide dark trace of the ditch and a central pit, on a vertical aerial photograph taken in 1977.
