Full Description

Possible Roman marching camp. Aerial photographs taken by the Moray Society in 1986 show the north well-rounded corner of possible camp, also a long linear cropmark running southwest to northeast in same field. Excavation exposed a shallow ditch 2m wide. Parallel to the inner edge was a pavement, 75cm wide of flat sandstones. It was exceedingly difficult ground to dig in. It is postulated that the stone pavement was the base of a turf wall. In view of scale and precision of the work it is probable that this was a Roman marching camp of unusual type. To the west of the same field are some possible ring-ditches and square barrows and other indeterminate features.
