Full Description

Site of a shell midden. Trenching in the later 19th century revealed a layer of sea shells 0.20-0.50m thick under 0.45m of soil: ashes and burnt stone interspersed the layer, but no artefacts or bone found. Pottery and artefacts were said to have been found on a slope nearby. While checking vertical aerial photographs taken in 1976 a number of crop marks were noted although, apart from scatters of pits, none are distinct. They cover a fairly large area and appear to represent possible sub-circular enclosures and linear features. The marks are rather confused with frost polygons and geomorphic marks, which are also visible. Rig and furrow, also visible as cop marks, covers the southwest of the area.
