Full Description
An area of rigs lying within a field boundary are visible on a vertical aerial photograph taken in 1988. They appear to overlay a possible circular enclosure on the southwest side. There are also other indeterminate marks which could possibly indicate earlier or recent activity at the airfield. The crop marks are visible on the northwest side of the main runway of RAF Lossiemouth airfield. A trial trenching evaluation by Wessex Archaeology in March 2018 ahead of taxi extension included four trenches along the north western side of this area of rigs. No features were recorded within Trenches 4 and 5. Trench 3 contained a curvilinear ditch, pits and postholes, indicative of prehistoric settlement although no dating evidence was recovered. Trench 6 contained a series of ditches aligned northwest-southeast which had not been visible as cropmarks. No artefacts were recovered/.
