Full Description

An incised, cup-marked and symbol stone, originally found at Clackmarras (NJ 246 584), now under a roofed shelter in the garden at Blackhills House (NJ25NE0060). In 1896 it had been in the garden of Strypes Farm (NJ25NE0058) having been taken there by the farmer, and then used as a gatepost. The rectangular quartzite stone measures 1.4 m x 0.6 m x 0.5 m, with the north face almost entirely covered with cup-marks arranged in irregular diagonal rows consisting of 56 single cup-marks. The largest is 7 cm in diameter and 2 cm deep, others include a cup and single ring, three pairs of conjoined cups, two wide grooves and three combination motifs of cup-marks and grooves. On the east face an area 762 mm long is hollowed out to a rough level by pecking, on which is a double spiral motif. The south face has a crescent motif with horns, five cup-marks and a V-shaped figure possibly a portion of V-rod. The west face has only a diagonal natural groove. The Pictish style crescent and spirals are deduced to be later than the cup-marks. The stone was recorded in December 2020 by Scotland's Rock Art Project.
