Full Description

Site of approximately 80 small clearance heaps ranging from 2-6m in diameter, and also four possible terraces visible round the east end of the hill, which is crossed from north-south by several parallel rickles of stones. Excavation of three heaps in 1974 showed that what were thought to be hut-circles by A. A. Woodham were in fact three clearance cairns, each composed of core of large boulders covered with a mound of smaller stones. No indication of burial found. Broad rig and furrow cultivation traces lie over most of the ridge. A flint arrowhead and a few flint flakes were found during the small excavation but unstratified. The cairns had been removed by 1984. Field survey by Headland Archaeology 2012 ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route found no extant cairns. Three discrete spreads of stone may be the result of cairnfield clearance. Thirteen cultivation ridges were visible at the time of survey, covering an irregular area of circa 4300 sq m, and aligned broadly north-south. The rigs were between 14m and 55m in length and 6-8m wide, standing up to 0.2m in height. Sample excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2013 on the area of a possible cairn at the eastern edge of the site. Excavation of an area 24m by 19.7m revealed two stone spreads, one 15m by 9.5m, the other 3.15m by 2.8m. The arrangement of stones was shown to be incidental rather than deliberate and whilst the stone spreads relate to clearance activity they are considered to be the result of particular topographic characteristics of the site. A second area of excavation investigated an area of rig and furrow at NO 86703 98654, and recorded four section of furrow cut into the subsoil, spaced circa 7m apart.
