Full Description

Site of a short cist, aligned east-west, found in August 1954 at a depth of 1.80m while extracting gravel from a knoll. The cist was paved with small stones and contained the skeletons of a young adult female and a baby accompanied by three beakers (WC Step 5 N/NR, SN Step 5 N3/L, and LN Step 5 N3/L). Two worked flints were found on the surface of the gravel immediately outside the southwest corner of the cist which can be almost certainly be ascribed to the burial. Several other fragments of flint along with two 'worked stones' were also found. The adult skeleton lay probably on its back with head at the west end. The child lay in northeast corner. A radiocarbon date is given as 2280 - 2030 BC.
