Trial trenching carried out by CFA at the location of a linear anomaly identified by geophysical survey in 2012 (NO88NE0147), recorded a pit, linear pit or ditch and a spread of silty clay with charcoal. No features were identified that would correspond with the linear anomaly. The linear pit or ditch produced fragments of hazelnut shell and sufficient charcoal for radiocarbon dating. A number of lithics were recovered although these could not be dated, the features are fairly typical of those found on prehistoric sites. The features did not appear to be structural and their function was unclear. Further excavation was carried out by CFA in April-June 2014. Five pits, two spreads and a linear feature, all containing charcoal, were excavated and a fragment of flint and a fragment of prehistoric pottery recovered. Rig and furrow cultivation was also identified. The majority of features related to post-improvement agriculture.
