Full Description
An evaluation was carried out at this site in 2006 by Murray Archaeological Services in advance of a proposed wastewater treatment scheme and pumping station. An evaluation trench excavated in the central area of the site appears to show that was deep infill in the recent past (confirmed by oral history). It was concluded that the narrow strip on the south of the site (unexcavated) is the only area which may be of archaeological importance, as it is in close proximity to the Old Tolbooth site, which has previously yielded human skeletons. It is recommended that a watching brief be maintained over any further ground work at the site. A further watching brief was undertaken by Murray Archaeological Services Ltd on 17 March, 3 April and 7 June 2007 while further pits were excavated but no archaeological features were noted.
