Full Description

A seven percent evaluation was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in June 2013 on the site of a proposed extension to the parish church graveyard. Four trenches were excavated across the site and two shallow palaeochannels were recorded. In the fill of the southern one was a sandstone block with one face roughly shaped, and with a 0.07 m wide sub-square socket in both faces. Its function is not clear, but it may be an unfinished millstone. No other features or finds were revealed during the evaluation. Further mitigation, in the form of a watching brief over the southern part of the site, is recommended. A watching brief was carried out in 2022 by Murray Archaeological Services during ground breaking work for cemetery extension works, in the southern area of the earlier evaluation. One water or ice formed natural feature was recorded and a small undiagnostic body sherd of prehistoric pottery was recovered from the topsoil fill of this feature.
