Full Description
The remains of a turf-covered cairn stand on the summit of St John's Knap. It was said to have been removed 'since 1967' although it is still visible on an aerial photograph taken in 1977, and still marked as remains of a cairn on present OS maps. An excavation in 1770 revealed 'a little under the surface..... were found 3 long flat stones, one of them covering the other 2, and having a shorter one at each end. In this was contained nearly a cart load of rich black earth, having a mixture of half-burnt bones and bits of oak charcoal without any kind of urn' (OSA).
