Full Description

Site of a chapel, the location annotated on the OS 1st edition map. The Chapel of St John at Barra is mentioned several times in the 17th century and was certainly in use by 1641, though it may be on an earlier site. The land formerly belonged to the Knights of St John (Eeles). Then owners were barons of Barras and formerly barons of Lumgair or Lunnkyr (Watt). The chapel was destroyed by the army of the Duke of Cumberland in 1746. According to the OS Name Book (1863) a more luxuriant crop is supposed to mark the site. There is a faint cropmark on a vertical aerial photograph taken in 1977.
