Full Description
A stone-lined cist was uncovered during ploughing in February 2009. The stone 'lid' was removed by the plough, and the find was reported to AAS. A site visit confirmed that the feature was a cist, with sherds of a broken pottery vessel visible. Further investigative work was carried out by GUARD as a Human Remains Call-Off contract. The cist contained the remains of an adult accompanied by a Beaker, fragments of copper awl and 11 struck flints. Little of the skeleton survived, but the fragments indicated that the individual had been placed with head to the west, with the artefacts also at that end. The positioning and the presence of the awl suggest a female, although there was no conclusive evidence. Radiocarbon dating gave a date for the burial of 2330-2040 BC.
