Full Description

A watching brief was carried out in August 2008 by MAS during the excavation of new tree planting pits within Milton Wood, part of Crathes Castle Estate. In total 8 pits were excavated. Identifiable features were only found in three tree pits. Of these only TPH 3 and 4 were considered significant. Both were recorded and examined further. TPH3 which appeared deeper and possibly more central to the underlying feature was backfilled. TPH 4 was fully excavated. A sherd of possible prehistoric pottery was found at the base of topsoil. It must be regarded as important as showing the potential of further prehistoric activity in this area of the estate. However, although it was near TPH 4, context 2, it did not appear to be associated with it or any other feature.
