Full Description
A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were carried out over this area by AOC in 1998 in advance of a proposed new sand and gravel quarry. Two sites within the development area were located: a drystone built enclosure (NO 7660 9688) and an occupied farmstead (NO79NE0146), both are depicted on the 1st edition OS map of 1867. A high number of flint artefacts and archaeological sites lie in the vicinity of the development, suggesting a potential for unknown archaeological features within the proposed development area. A walkover survey was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services (MAS) in July 2018 on the three fields, no visible archaeological features were found, with only one small waste flint flake found. The land has been subject to cultivation for a considerable period. Trial trenching evaluation of the western two fields, Field 2 and Field 3, was carried out by MAS in September 2019. Twenty two trenches were excavated, but no features or artefacts of archaeological significance were recorded. This compared to the area of prehistoric activity that was identified in Field 1 (NO79NE0125) during the evaluation (July 2018) and excavation (August - September 2018).
