Full Description

Village, founded circa 1760 by Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk, to re-house cottars cleared from surrounding farm towns of the 'bleak Moor of Ballintomb'. It preserves to an excellent degree the feel of a small planned settlement of the 18th century, consisting of principal street running through a square, with several by-lanes running off. The village was partially destroyed by a fire in 1783. Several late 18th century weavers' cottages can be seen on the west and south sides of the square while the majority of present one and two storeyed houses are 19th and 20th century in date, part of the subsequent reconstruction.

Period Notes
Founded circa 1760; partially destroyed by fire 1783.
