Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out in August 2009 by MAS in advance of a proposed quarry extension. Twelve evaluation trenches were excavated and a small test pit was cut through the base of the filled-in pond. No archaeological finds or features were found in 10 of the trenches or the test pit, but a number of features and prehistoric pottery sherds were observed in trenches 5 and 6. Apart from 1 body sherd of prehistoric pottery found in F4 (trench 5), all the finds were from F1 (trench 5) or in the plough lines or topsoil directly beside it. Some 60 sherds and fragments were found which included 14 rims. All the pottery appears to be of Neolithic or Bronze Age date (most fitting within the range of Neolithic round-based bowls) but requires specialist identification. The small assemblage of flints recovered also requires specialist identification. Although charcoal was abundant in F1 (TR5) there was no evidence of in situ burning. A bulk soil sample was retained of fill F1/2 (TR5) which requires analysis and charcoal identification for possible radiocarbon dating. The features have been tentatively identified as either an area of short-lived occupation or possibly an area with temporary or specialised function.
