Full Description
Site of a burial cairn, removed in 1984 as it lay on the route of the proposed Laurencekirk by-pass. A watching brief was conducted during removal. The mound was shown to be a low burial cairn, erected over two cremation burials and a pyre-site. Beneath the approximate centre of the cairn a shallow sub-oval pit had been dug into the subsoil. Signs of burning suggested that this pit had been used in the cremation process but its clean fill indicated that the pyre debris had been carefully removed very soon after cremation, as the backfilled topsoil was hardened and gritty from contact with the hot pit base. Beneath the northern arc of the cairn a small pit contained a cordoned cinerary urn. Approximately 2.75m south of the cremation pit a small pit contained a tightly packed cremation deposit which also contained a possible chert barbed and tanged projectile point. Two other features in the southeast quadrant appeared to contain pyre debris. The cairn which overlay these features consisted of a low mound of rounded boulders (40cm max diameter) set in a matrix of dark brown rich soil which had been heavily penetrated by tree roots.
