Full Description

Site of castle dating from the 16th century. The first part of the old castle was probably founded by Sir Alexander and Lady Falconer. The stones were used for dykes round a plantation and the main steading. Two of the stones are 'on the offices attached to the farmhouse at Mains'. One is dated 1556 and has the head of a female carved upon it. The other is inscribed with LAF 1648. No surface traces remain. In July 1993 a resistivity survey and trial excavations were carried out by SUAT. In the northwest corner of Mains of Haulkerton Wood a fragmentary foundation wall cut into natural clay was located. These remains correspond to the supposed location of the castle. The excavation revealed that the castle remains had been extensively robbed in the 18th century and disturbed by 20th century dumping. The shallow remains of a possibly barmkin were also found.
