Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services in 2008 in advance of a proposed residential development. In total, 11 trenches were excavated across the site comprising 10 percent of the development area. A firepit was recorded in trench 6 and was hand-excavated. Charcoal was observed in the fill, which has been retained for possible further analysis, but no finds were present which might help to date this feature. Two flints and a body sherd of redware medieval pottery were found unstratified in the top of the ploughsoil. It was later recorded that there was insufficient charcoal for C14 dating. A subsequent watching brief, centred on the previously excavated firepit in Trench 6, was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services on the 27th November 2019. This second phase of work covered a soil strip over a 20 m square. Topsoil depths of between 400 and 800 mm were recorded, shallower on the higher part of the slope to the north, with a slight slope to the west. The natural was a thick yellow clay with a tendency to waterlogging. Apart from a modern clay drain cutting into the natural on the east side of the area, no other features or finds were identified.
Period Notes
Fire pit may be prehistoric; pottery sherd is medieval.
