Full Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Scotia Archaeology during groundwork preparation prior to the building of five residential units at Queen's Close , Montrose. However, due to lack of space a topsoil strip was extended to trenches being dug under archaeological supervision. No features were recorded but three sherds of ceramics were recovered from the topsoil. One body sherd in a smooth, buff fabric with splash of yellow-green glaze may have come from a jug and be of late medieval date. Another sherd was from a thin, salt-glazed, stoneware vessel and another very small fragment in a buff fabric with a very heavy brown glaze, both probably of post-medieval date. The retrieval of three sherds of pottery strongly suggests that there was medieval and post-medieval activity in the vicinity.
