Full Description
Site of a Bobbin Mill which is shown on both the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. On the 1st edition map there are two buildings shown, the 2nd edition has two buildings marked. The 2005 map shows that all traces of this mill have been removed and the site is now redeveloped as residential housing. Evidence from documentary research J Gilliatt suggests that the bobbin mill made use of an existing mill building shown as Upper Mill on Thomson's 1832 Atlas of Scotland. It was was run by James and John Brebner (of the Mills of Inchmarlo) between 1875 and 1885, and in 1887 (when the Brebner's moved their business to Aberdeen) it was taken over by James Collie who had been working in the mill as a wood turner. In 1891 and 1901 Collier was listed as a 'bobbin maker and general wood turner' with his three sons who worked as wood turners and bobbin makers. The mills appears to have gone out of use as a bobbin mill after 1905 and on the 1928 OS map the site is marked as Burnside Cottage.
