Full Description

Archaeological watching briefs were carried out by Headland Archaeology during topsoil stripping for Phase 8 of the quarry expansion. Monitoring of the Phase 8/1 area in February to March 2006 recorded a series of furrows, from a pre-improvement field system of ridge and furrow, running across the strip in two distinct orientations. The majority ran northwest-southeast, and were between 1.2 m and 1.8 m in width, and 0.1 m and 0.18 m in depth, and were in excess of 50 m long. The smaller group, in the southeast part of the area stripped, ran northeast-southwest, and were of similar dimensions, although visible lengths did not exceed 15 m. A further watching brief was undertaken in June 2007 by Headland in the Phase 8/2 area immediately north of Phase 8/1. Two small undated pits were recorded as well as further pre-improvement cultivation rigs. A watching brief was undertaken over Phase 8/3 between 16th-19th June 2008 and 20th-21st April 2009. This identified a group of features, thought to be of prehistoric date. One of the pits probably functioned as a hearth, while the rest may be the remains of a possible structure in the area. Together with the results from previous phases the watching brief has demonstrated low level of perhaps sporadic activity on the site in prehistory as well as a series of post-medieval furrows. The spacing of these indicates they belong to a pre-improvement field system.
