Full Description

Site of medieval village, presumably connected with 13th century castle (NO67NE0008). It was created the County town in 1531 until the end of the 16th century when Stonehaven took over. Kincardine had neither a tolbooth nor lodgings fit for the accommodation of officials of the judiciary. Commercial decline may also have been hastened by the realignment of the Cairn O'Mount road around the north side of Hunter's Hill. The local market went to Fettercairn and Auchinblae, and the market cross which was extant in 1752 is said to have been removed to Fettercairn in the mid 18th century. The town deteriorated rapidly so that by 1789 only a few houses remained in the vicinity of the two gate ports and the cross. The East port stood at NO 6695 7496 and the West port at NO 6648 7451. The cross stood at NO 6666 7474. By 1863 nothing remained. Various artefacts have been recovered from the field over a number of years.

Period Notes
Created county town 1531-2 until 16th century. Only few houses in 1789. E & W port and cross marked on estate map of 1789.
