Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by AOC Archaeology in October 2016 ahead of proposed residential development (Zones 5 and 6), within the grounds of Fasque House estate (NO67NW0041, NO67NW0016). Three features were uncovered towards the eastern edge of Zone 5. A V-shaped ditch (possibly a field boundary) and an oval shaped pit most likely relate to post-medieval activity. A shallow charcoal rich deposit may be of earlier date. In Zone 6 a number of probable prehistoric features were recorded on a ridge line at the west edge and in a small hollow some 50 m to the east. These included a ring ditch enclosing an area 6 m in diameter, the ditch 0.86 m wide and up to 0.19 m deep, and containing two amorphous pits. Outwith the ditch were several circular pits which measured between 0.46 m and 1 m in diameter, all containing various amounts of charcoal visible on the surface. A second probable roundhouse structure was also recorded, comprising an arc of postholes. A number of modern or post-medieval pits were also revealed in Zone 6. A subsequent watching brief was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in July 2017 in the southeast part of Zone 6 during groundworks for three houses. This recorded the probable remains of a hut circle, represented by post-holes and a pit, and another small pit. Part of the investigations were within the cropmark site NO67NE0043. Further mitigation required in this area.
