Full Description

Probable site of a cist. In 1871 a cist, with a crouched inhumation and a food vessel was discovered in a sand pit on the south side of Hunter's Hill. This is tentatively identified as the gravel pit shown on the 2nd edition OS map. The cist was 3.5 by 2.5 ft and 2 ft deep (1.06 m x 0.76 m x 0.61 m), and the rudely ornamented food vessel was 5 ins high by 6 ins (12.7 cm x 15.2 cm) across the mouth. It had a black streak round the interior, showing that it had possibly been half-filled with food. It was gifted to Montrose museum.
