Full Description

Site of a mansion house set within a designed landscape (NO66SE0109), built in circa 1815 with additions in circa 1850 and in the late-19th century. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as a T-plan building with a quadrangular wing attached to the north end. On the 2nd edition OS map the T-plan section has been extended to rectangular. It had a two-storey, nine-bay, lightly stugged ashlar south front. There were giant Ionic pilasters to the centre and ends, and a three-bay pediment with rosettes over the capitals and a marble roundel within. The flanking elevations were plain, with the eastern end showing evidence of the earlier phase of the house. A bay on the west elevation and a Roman-Doric porch was added in 1850. The mansion is noted as being semi-derelict in 1971, and current maps show it has since been removed. Rosemount Estate was purchase around 1788 by John Duncan. In 1929 it was requisitioned by the War Department and later housed a contingent of Polish Armed Forces and also German prisoners of war. The house was demolished in 1982.
