Full Description
Site of a Chapel. The chapel of Eglisjohn or Eccles John, 'ane chappell erectit for pilgrimage' (Brechin Reg 1856) which stood on the slight eminence known as the Kirkhill. Burials have been found during ploughing in the area including a wooden coffin and a stone cist found a few yards north of the hillock some years before 1858. According to Warden (1880-5) traces of the chapel remained in 1882 but nothing was seen in 1958 when visited by the OS. A house was built on the site in 1963, more skeletons were found. A rectilinear cropmark was recorded by the RCAHMS in 1994 at NO 687 602, some 80m southwest from the site of the chapel. It is approximately 100m in length running northwest - southeast with two rounded corners at the north and south ends. This feature is possibly the boundary of the burial ground belonging to the chapel. A second feature, possibly a pit, has also been identified some 50m south of the chapel and covers an area approximately 16m x 10m. Subsequently photographed by AAS in 2001.
