Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by CFA in March 2021 ahead of proposed development. A total of 40 trenches were excavated, but only two features of unknown date were recorded on the east side of the field. These were an elongated pit or short ditch and base of a secondary pit. Further trenches excavated in the proximity of these uncovered no further possible archaeological features. Analysis of environmental samples from within one of the pits recorded a small amount of carbonised material including some fragments of hazlenut shell and hazel wood charcoal. Radiocarbon dating of one of the pieces of charcoal gave a Early Neolithic dates (3938-3649 BC).

Radiocarbon dating samples from one pit: SUERC-104431, charcoal, 5000 +/-25 BP, calibrated to 3938-3658 BC at 2 sigma. SUERC-104435, hazelnut shell, 4941+/-24 BP, calibrated to 3771-3649 BC at 2 sigma.
