Full Description

Corn-drying kiln revealed in almost complete plan during topsoil stripping. It was womb-shaped in plan with the flue sloping up to the east. The fill consisted of 15cm of topsoil and 20cm of a silty pinky-brown matrix with small dark humified charcoal lumps throughout, some of turf. This layer gave on to a sandier brown/yellow material which sat on 2cm of humified charcoal which in turn sat on a red sandstone slab bedded in a dry silty light grey/yellow clay-like layer. A base sherd of a tripod cup of Scarborough ware was found in the upper fill of the bowl.
